The next generation of South Africa’s most popular bakkie has officially been revealed overseas, and Toyota has confirmed it will be built locally. While exact pricing, specifications, and launch timing are not yet confirmed, here’s everything we currently know about the new Hilux and what it could mean for South African buyers.

What We Know So Far

  • The 9th-generation Hilux has been unveiled globally, debuting first in Thailand.

  • Toyota South Africa has confirmed that local production will continue at the Prospecton plant in KwaZulu-Natal, ensuring the new model will remain “built in South Africa.”

  • The new Hilux features a bolder front-end design with a wide grille, squared wheel arches, and “TOYOTA” block lettering replacing the traditional logo on certain trims.

  • Inside, expect a completely redesigned cabin, with higher-end models offering twin 12.3-inch displays, an upgraded infotainment system, an electronic parking brake, and a more premium finish.

  • Under the hood, the proven 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine is expected to return, possibly with mild-hybrid technology for improved efficiency.

  • Toyota has also introduced an electric version (Hilux BEV) in other markets, featuring dual-motor 4x4 capability and around 300 km of claimed range. However, it’s not yet confirmed whether this model will be released in South Africa.

  • The official launch for the South African market is expected sometime in 2026.

What We Don’t Yet Know

  • Exact South African specifications, including engine options, trim levels, and drivetrain combinations.

  • Whether the electric or hybrid variants will be available locally at launch.

  • Final pricing for each trim and model configuration.

  • The precise launch date for local dealerships and pre-orders.

Estimated Pricing (Our Best Guess)

Toyota has not released official pricing for the South African market, but based on current Hilux prices, expected upgrades, and inflation, here’s an estimated range for what we might expect:

  • Entry-level double cab diesel: around R650,000

  • Mid-range off-road spec: around R800,000

  • Top-spec luxury model: around R950,000 to R1,050,000

These figures are only guesses based on current market trends. The actual prices may differ depending on final specifications, import costs, and exchange rate fluctuations closer to launch.

Why This Is Important

The Hilux is more than just a bakkie in South Africa — it’s an icon. The new model continues Toyota’s legacy of reliability while moving toward modern design, improved comfort, and possible electrification. Keeping production local means continued support for South African jobs and exports.
