The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) market in South Africa has grown massively. A PHEV differs from a normal hybrid because it has a much larger battery that can be charged from a wall plug or charger, allowing the vehicle to travel for a significant distance using electricity alone.

Below is a list of PHEVs currently available in South Africa, ranked roughly from cheapest to most expensive.

There are also considerably more expensive performance/luxury PHEVs available from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Range Rover and Lamborghini, but the table above covers most of the models likely to be cross-shopped as everyday vehicles.

Some Interesting Standouts

Cheapest PHEV: BYD Atto 2 DM-i – from R449,900.
BYD has pushed the entry point for a plug-in hybrid well below where it was only a year ago. The Atto 2 is available in Comfort at R449,900 and Dynamic at R489,900.

Cheapest larger family PHEV: BYD Sealion 5 – from R509,900.
The Sealion 5 offers around 52 km of electric driving before relying on its petrol-hybrid system.

Interesting value option: Geely E5 EM-i – from R599,999.
It offers around 83 km of claimed electric range and up to roughly 943 km combined range.

Long-range affordable option: Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV – from R619,900.
The Tiggo 7 offers around 95 km of claimed EV range and approximately 1,200 km total petrol/electric range.

Performance/value option: Haval H6 GT PHEV – R799,900.
This is one of the more interesting PHEVs currently available: 321 kW, 762 Nm, AWD and a claimed 180 km electric range.

Long-range seven-seater: Chery Tiggo 9 PHEV Vanguard AWD – R989,900.
The flagship version has a much larger battery than the Pinnacle and claims 160 km of electric-only range, while retaining seven seats. The cheaper R839,900 Pinnacle claims 90 km.

PHEV bakkie: BYD Shark 6 – R989,900.
The Shark combines a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with electric motors, producing 321 kW and 650 Nm, with a claimed 85 km pure-electric range.

Longest-range mainstream SUV: The Toyota RAV4 PHEV claims around 142 km of electric range, while the Omoda C9 PHEV claims around 150 km. The Haval H6 GT PHEV goes even further on paper at 180 km.

PHEV vs Normal Hybrid

A normal hybrid such as a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid has a relatively small battery that charges itself while driving. You don't plug it in and it can only travel very short distances purely electrically.

A PHEV has a much larger battery and charging port. If your daily commute is within its electric range and you charge at home every night, you can potentially do most normal weekday driving without using much petrol. The petrol engine is still there for longer journeys.

That makes PHEVs particularly interesting in South Africa: you can use the vehicle almost like an EV for commuting without being dependent on public charging infrastructure when travelling long distances.

A note on the figures

Prices and specifications change regularly, and dealers may advertise discounts below the manufacturer's recommended price. Electric ranges are manufacturer-claimed figures measured under specific test conditions, so real-world range will normally vary with speed, weather, air-conditioning use, terrain and driving style.
